Want to play music on multiple Google Home speakers? Here's how

Multiple speakers in one room will be automatically grouped together. However, say you want to add all speakers on a floor to a "Downstairs" group. To do that, open the Google Home app and tap Add and choose "Create Speaker Group." The Google Home app will take you through the final phases of setup, which may vary if you already have other devices set up.

You can choose to play genres, playlists, individual artists and songs, and so on—just change the “study” name for whatever group of speakers you’re referring too. Whether you’re setting up your first Sonos speaker or adding new ones, everything is done via the Sonos app for Android or iOS . The app is also available for Windows and macOS, which is great for when it comes time to pick your tunes and control playback, though the setup must be done on a phone or tablet.

Follow the instructions on screen to connect the speaker to your Wi-Fi network and apply any updates. Tick boxes to play your music in the room you’re in, so you can select multiple HomePods at once or switch the audio output from one speaker to another as you move between rooms. HomePods can be grouped together in stereo pairs too, which is done during the setup process or from the Home app in iOS . We're assuming you have a few Google Home speakers and several smart home devices, like a smart light bulb or smart switch, throughout your house. You might already know that if you say, "OK, Google, turn on the lights," all of the connected smart lights in the house will turn on. If I ask Google Assistant to play music in the “Family room,” the Assistant will play my music on all three speakers at the same time.

You can find instructions for steps in this Support Article and this Spotify Answer. Afterwards, upon linking the accounts, their connection will be built anew and any damaged files from previous installations will have been removed. At the bottom left corner of your screen, tap Devices to find a list of available devices. Following Google's legal woes with Sonos, in early 2022, it actually became a bit more difficult to control the volume of speaker groups in a Google multi-room music setup. If you want to mix and match voice and smartphone controls, you can control your music by hitting the Cast button in an app like Spotify and doing things from there. You'll also notice that on the Home screen of the Google Home app your speakers will be displayed in rooms e.g. 'Living room' and 'Bathroom' which is a handy way to glance at them.

Link Your Music Accounts

If you have more than one Google Home device, here's how to set them up and enable multi-room audio to get sound everywhere. In the settings page for each speaker, you can also adjust the sound profile, though doing so on a Nest Mini wouldn’t do you much good. While Google makes some great speakers, speaker groups are not limited to Google-made devices. As a general rule of thumb, as long as the speaker works with Google Assistant and is seen in Google Home, you can more than likely place it in a speaker group. The best part about this feature is that there is no need to keep switching between accounts.

At the top of the stairs there's a short hall with a bathroom, and two rooms. There's about 15 actual stairs, and then about 20 feet around a corner and into a room for separating the two. If the device is assigned to a room, you'll see the room name directly under the device name.

Issues with volume control

You can also use the volume buttons on your phone or voice commands to raise or lower the master volume for the group as a whole. This helps balance audio across rooms and set a consistent level no matter how loud or quiet you want it in each room. This is in fact one of the top benefits of having multiple Google Home devices linked to the same ecosystem. These devices offer support for multiroom audio allowing you to simultaneously play the same music on several devices. With this feature, you can play music at a reasonable volume and move about the house without missing a single beat from your favorite audio. To get music playing in a room, you need to use a voice command like “Alexa, play rock music on study.” When you’ve heard enough, say “Alexa, stop playing music on study” .

When you create a group, it doesn’t change the ability the speaker has to play music by itself; rather, it just adds a separate button at the bottom of your main Google Home page for that particular group. One of the best ways to do it is by going to a music app on your smartphone, selecting the music you want and casting it to a specific Home device. Then go to a different music app, select some other music and cast it to another device. Though this approach is quite lengthy, it works well, avoiding the typical confusion that at times arises with voice commands. On the next screen, you'll see a list of all the audio devices you have connected to your account. You can create any number of groups with any arrangement of speakers you want.

We walk you through a step-by-step guide on how to set up Voice Match. This works even if the speakers are in the same physical place, as Sonos has no way of knowing that the speakers are separated or near each other, all it cares about is the rooms and groups as set up in the app. Finally, a Sonos room can only be a member of one group, as otherwise, the same speaker would have to somehow play two different audio streams.

You’ll need to give the group a name, then you’re ready to go. Whenever you open the AirPlay dialog box inside an app you can see HomePods listed under the name of the room you’ve assigned them too—Bedroom, Study, and so on. Any other AirPlay-enabled devices you’ve got on your home network, like Apple TV boxes, appear in this list as well. With your new HomePod plugged in and powered on, all you need to do is hold an iOS device close to it. You should see a prompt to set up the speaker, and as you work through the steps, you’ll be able to assign your HomePod to a room in the house.

If you would rather not have other users accessing your music and videos, ask them to set their own default music service. This has the advantage of people not being able to hijack your speakers and play their own music, but it also prevents the two Sonos systems from communicating with each other. This means you can’t have a central controller for volume etc. Check out The GearBrain, our smart home compatibility checker to see the other compatible products that work with Google Assistant enabled devices.
